Mumbai Indians is a franchise cricket team based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team is owned by India’s biggest conglomerate, Reliance Industries, through its 100% subsidiary Indiawin Sports.
One of the most high-profile teams in the tournament, Mumbai Indians are currently also the most successful, with five IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. They were the tournament runners-up in 2010 and qualified for the playoffs on 3 occasions.
In the 2024 season, the Mumbai-based team has appointed a new captain, recently traded from Gujarat Titans and former MI player, Hardik Pandya. Mark Boucher is the head coach for the Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians play their home games at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The stadium is named after former BCCI President S. K. Wankhede. The Mumbai Cricket Association owns the stadium and is situated near Marine Drive, Arabian Sea, in the Churchgate area of South Mumbai. The seating capacity of the stadium is 33,108. The headquarters of BCCI and Mumbai Cricket Association is in the ‘Cricket Centre’, which is situated on the premises of the stadium.
FORMAT
The teams are split into two groups, A and B, with five teams in each group. Each team will play one game against all five teams in the other group, both home and away, and two games against the four teams in their own group. In total, each team will play seven home games and seven away games. After the group stage, the top four teams based on total points will advance to the playoffs. In the playoffs, the top two teams will face each other in “Qualifier 1”, while the other two teams will play in the “Eliminator” match. The winner of Qualifier 1 will advance directly to the final. The losing team from Qualifier 1 will get a second chance by playing the winner of the Eliminator in “Qualifier 2”. The winner of Qualifier 2 will also advance to the final. The team that wins the final match will be crowned the champions of the Indian Premier League.
