According to reports, the governing body of Indian cricket is unhappy with the regular absence of senior players for the bilateral series.

The national selection committee has announced a second-string squad for the ODI series in West Indies, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah missing from the action.

Shikhar Dhawan will lead the side, with Ravindra Jadeja getting the vice-captaincy post for the first time in his career.

Earlier, the senior players were unavailable for the T20I series against South Africa.

According to the Times of India, the senior players are rested, citing workload management as the reason.

“In every meeting, the issue of workload management comes up. Players like Rohit, Kohli, Pandya, Bumrah, and Shami are always talked about needing rest. All these players have got a preference to get rest over other players. The trainers and physios inform the selectors through the team management that these players need rest.”

It impacts the creation of a stable squad as players are allowed to take a break too often.

“These players sit out now and then. Rohit has barely played for India after becoming full-time captain. Bumrah and Shami, too, play fewer matches. There is a struggle to form a settled team. Pant is the only player who has been regular for the team.”

Since playing in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021, Rohit has missed out on both home and away series against South Africa. He was not a part of the final Test against England after testing positive for COVID-19. Virat was rested for the T20I series against Sri Lanka and the Proteas.
