Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise, owned by Kalanithi Maran of the SUN Group, was founded in 2012. The team came into existence after the Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers were terminated by the IPL. SRH made their Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2013. They reached the playoffs in the first year, finishing a credible fourth.
In 2016, Sunrisers Hyderabad lifted their maiden and only IPL title to date, defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 8 runs in the final. SRH batted first in the final at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and posted 208/7. Skipper David Warner scored 69 off 38, while Ben Cutting clubbed an unbeaten 39 in 15 balls. RCB responded with 200/7 as Chris Gayle scored 76 off 38 and Virat Kohli 54 off 35.
SRH made it to the playoffs in the next four seasons as well. They reached the final for the second time in 2018 but went down to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as Shane Watson smashed an unbeaten 117 off 57 balls. The franchise has been disappointed in the last two seasons, finishing eighth.
Warner is the leading run-scorer for the franchise. She has won the Orange Cap thrice – in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the leading wicket-taker. He won the Purple Cap twice, in 2016 and 2017. West Indies legend Brian Lara is the current head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Aiden Markram has been named as captain for IPL 2023. He replaces Kane Williamson, who was released following a poor 2022 season. Ahead of the IPL 2023 auction, SRH retained 12 players. Some of the big buys at the auction were Harry Brook, Mayank Agarwal, Heinrich Klaasen, and Adil Rashid.
David Warner, Shikhar Dhawan, Kane Williamson, Darren Sammy, Kumar Sangakkara, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jonny Bairstow, Martin Guptill, and Wriddhiman Saha are some of the prominent names to have represented Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL over the years.
The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, which has a capacity of 55,000, is the franchise’s home ground. According to Brand Finance, the brand value of Sunrisers Hyderabad was US$57.4 million in 2020. The franchise suffered a decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
