Hardik Pandya
Hardik and other players were fined by the BCCI for their slow over-rate offence in the match against Lucknow Super Giants.

Ever since Hardik Pandya took over as Mumbai Indians captain for IPL 2024, the all-rounder has faced intense criticism. Pandya, formerly captain of the Gujarat Titans, has been subjected to booing from hostile fans in all games. Amid Hardik’s difficult homecoming, legendary Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram has offered support to Pandya as he transitions into the leadership role.

Mumbai Indians supporters have frequently voiced their discontent with the captaincy change, while Chennai Super Kings had a smooth leadership transition in what looks to be MS Dhoni‘s final season. Currently, Hardik is out of form. Speaking up in favor of the troubled Hardik, the former pacer said that mocking the captain does not benefit the team.

“This is the issue that Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India are facing. We tend to hold onto grudges. We tell our kids that on how Pandya was appointed captain 20 years ago. We never move on. I believe fans should have a little composure. after all he plays for the Mumbai Indians and can turn things around for you. It makes no sense to criticize your own player. You can be negative for a while, but then you have to move on,” Wasim Akram said on Sportskeeda.

Hardik Pandya, once seen as Rohit Sharma‘s successor for the Indian national team, has struggled as captain of the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. Pandya has been booed by fans at multiple venues, and MI now have a 3-5 record in eight matches. The five-time champions have yet to see a standout performance from their captain, who has failed to deliver.

“In franchise cricket, teams often make decisions with the long-term future in mind. For example, CSK transitioned their captaincy with a long-term perspective. Mumbai Indians may have had a similar long-term plan. In my view, Rohit Sharma should have continued as captain for one more year before passing the role to Hardik Pandya. This was likely not a personal decision, but rather part of a broader succession strategy,” he added.
