The IPL Code of Conduct requires captains to bear responsibility for their team's first over rate offense.
BCCI fined Shreyas Iyer ₹12 lakh for his team's slow over rate during their IPL 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday at Eden Gardens.

Shreyas Iyer was fined INR 12 lakh by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for his team’s slow over rate during their IPL 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday at Eden Gardens. The IPL Code of Conduct requires captains to bear responsibility for their team’s first over rate offense.

“Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, was fined for his team’s slow over rate during their Indian Premier League match against the Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens on April 17, 2024.” said an official statement by the BCCI.

“Since this was KKR’s first offence this season, Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh for not meeting the minimum over rate requirements as per the IPL’s Code of Conduct.” as continued in the statement.

Despite being one fielder short outside the thirty yard circle in the final over due to a slow over rate, KKR nearly won the match against RR. However, Jos Buttler‘s 107 not out off 60 balls carried RR to victory, as he hit the winning runs off the last ball. After a slow start, Buttler accelerated brilliantly to put Rajasthan ahead of the hosts. He single-handedly won the game for the Sanju Samson-led franchise.

RR secured joint-highest successful run chase in IPL history, defeating KKR to strengthen their position in the points table. KKR was leading the contest for most of the match. RR were in a need of 96 runs im the last six overs. Buttler produced a heroic performance as an Impact sub to snatch victory from KKR’s grasp. The England white-ball captain, absent from RR’s previous match due to injury, smashed nine fours and six sixes.

“I certainly didn’t think we would get into this situation. It was a rollercoaster ride. Cricket is unpredictable. Buttler was striking the ball cleanly and his timing was perfect. We will have to accept defeat and move on. It’s frustrating when your best bowlers are hit for sixes in crucial moments. It is better that this happened now rather than later in the tournament. It’s a good learning experience for us.” Iyer said in the post match presentation ceremony.
