Rajasthan Royals are among the franchises that debuted in the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2008. The franchise is considered among the main ones in the history of the T20 league. They were also the winners of the first-ever IPL under the leadership of the great Shane Warne. In a thrilling final at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai, Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three wickets, chasing down 164 off the last ball. The Royals were also the runners-up of the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy.
After a bright start, Rajasthan Royals were eliminated in the playoffs stage in every season from 2009 to 2012. They made the playoffs in 2013 and 2015 but could not proceed further. In a major setback, the Supreme Court of India suspended Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings for two years in connection with the 2013 betting scandal. As a result, the Royals could not feature in the 2016 and 2017 IPL editions. They made a comeback to the IPL in 2018.
Rajasthan Royals made an impressive comeback in 2018, reaching the playoffs. However, they were eliminated in the group stage in the next three editions. Following the sudden demise of their first captain Shane Warne, an inspired Rajasthan Royals reached the final of the 2022 edition. However, they failed to win the title. Batting first, they were held to 130/9, a total Gujarat Titans (GT), playing in their first season, chased down by seven wickets in 18.1 overs to win the tournament in their maiden appearance.
