Shreyas Iyer ruled out
Shreyas Iyer likely to miss the IPL due to back injury

In the ongoing fourth and final game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India dealt a heavy blow as star batter Shreyas Iyer did not come to bat in the first innings after he complained of back pain, following which he was sent for further scans.

Iyer has had a history of back pain, as the 28-year-old missed the ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this year due to his back trouble. Also, the KKR skipper missed the first Test of BGT due to the same reason.

In the latest development, Iyer’s scan results are not encouraging and will now visit a specialist.  Given the nature of the injury, Shreyas is likely to miss the upcoming ODI series and might also skip a few games in the IPL.

The BCCI is sweating hard because they do not want a repeat case of Jasprit Bumrah, who is out of action for almost a year due to his back issues. Also, the apex cricketing board is angry with NCA because it is the third time a player has suffered an injury relapse after getting clearance from the academy in Bangalore.

A BCCI official, speaking to InsideSports, spoke about Iyer and NCA. “It is frustrating. Shreyas should not have been rushed into the team. We do not know whether he will be fit for the ODI series or not.”

The Indian management has not announced any replacement for Iyer for the ODI series, but Sanju Samson is the frontrunner to replace the KKR skipper for the series from March 17.
