Raja said that India have all their bases covered when it comes to batting, bowling, and fitness, while Pakistan need to raise their level massively

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja has weighed in on the impending India vs. Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2023, suggesting a crucial change to the team lineup. Raja’s perspective centers on the exclusion of Fakhar Zaman from the roster for the high-stakes match.

In their recent victory over Nepal, Pakistan displayed dominance with Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed delivering standout performances. Babar’s 151-run knockoff 131 balls marked his 19th ODI century, while Iftikhar’s unbeaten 109 off 71 balls secured his maiden century. Pakistan set a commanding target of 342/6 and comfortably limited Nepal to 104 runs.

However, Pakistan’s early setback saw openers Fakhar Zaman (14) and Imam-ul-Haq (9) dismissed swiftly. Fakhar’s ongoing struggle with form raises concerns, given his lackluster recent performances, including scores of 2, 30, and 27 against Afghanistan. With vital matches Asia Cup matches ahead, Fakhar’s inconsistent form poses challenges for Pakistan.

Ramiz Raja addressed Fakhar Zaman’s form, highlighting his struggles and unique playing style. Raja emphasized the need for an in-form opener, as early dismissals intensify pressure on the team.

“The main issue is Fakhar Zaman. He is an unconventional hitter, but when someone like that becomes out of form, it takes some time to come up with remedies. He’s a bottom-handed player who plays on the leg-side, but somehow he adjusts and scores,” Raja explained on his official YouTube channel.

“He played three matches against Afghanistan and failed to make an impression. His body language is deteriorating, and Pakistan desperately needs an in-form opener. It adds pressure if Imam is also sacked cheaply. Pakistan has to assess Fakhar. I believe they should rest him and give him some space. Sidelining him is beneficial for both him and Pakistan. He’s a good player, and Pakistan has given him opportunities. But against India, given his current form, that possibility isn’t worth taking,” Raja added.

The India vs. Pakistan clash is a highlight in Group A, set in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Both teams aim for victory against their arch-rivals, with potential follow-up clashes in the Super Fours and final stages. Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await these high-stakes encounters.
