Last week, a video surfaced on the net, where Virat Kohli, his wife Anushka Sharma and their daughter Vamika visited famous Hindu saint Neem Karoli’s Ashram in Vrindavan, Mathura.
Kohli and Anushka’s families are big followers of Karoli baba, who died in 1973 after falling into a coma due to diabetes. The duo has often been spotted visiting baba’s ashrams in different cities.
Not just the two, but several renowned figures like Apple founder Steve Jobs, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and famous Hollywood actress Julia Roberts are also prominent devotees of Baba Neem Karoli. But who is this renowned saint?
Baba Neem Karoli was born in 1900 by the name of Lakshman Narayan Sharma, who left his home soon after he got married when he was 11 years old. Baba, famously referred to as Maharaj-ji, was a big devotee of the Hindu deity Hanumanji and left home because he wanted a life free of worldly goods.
After wandering the whole of India as a saint, baba settled at the Neeb Karori village, which gets misspelt as neem Karoli, and that was how baba got his famous name, Neem Karoli Baba since people started referring to him by his misspelt name.
However, he did return to his family life upon his father’s request. Thus, he has two sons and a daughter. Although he also continued his practices as a saint.
Locals were in awe of his spiritual lessons, and soon Neem Karoli Baba’s popularity reached the people in the West.
Several Americans visited baba in the 60s and 70s to learn valuable lessons about life. One of the main principles of baba’s teaching was Bhakti yoga.
Hollywood actress Julia Roberts got influenced by the level that she practices Hinduism.
Apple founder Steve Jobs visited India in 1974 to visit baba but found that he had passed away. Nevertheless, Jobs was heavily inspired by the teachings that baba left behind and even influenced Mark Zuckerberg to visit India in 2015 when he was going through tough times.
