Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans defeated Punjab Kings by three wickets on April 21. The Indian batter Shubman Gill is the top contender to lead the national team, according to Robin Uthappa. Gill’s performance secured Gujarat’s fourth win this in the Indian Premier League 2024. He took over as captain before the start of the 17th season.

After Gujarat’s 3-wicket win, Uthappa spoke highly of Gill on JioCinema, calling the star batter “a gift for the Indian cricket” who is steadily maturing into an all-time great. The former cricketer also remarked that Gill is slowly developing into a prolific leader, with the potential to captain the national team.

“In my opinion, he is a tremendous asset to Indian cricket, maturing into an all-time great within. We have witnessed him flourish and develop into an accomplished leader who will is likely to captain not only his IPL team but also the Indian national team in the years to come,” Uthappa said on JioCinema.

Uthappa praised Gill’s measured approach in his innings of 35, but felt the GT skipper needed some assistance from the other end.

“He played a great innings. I felt he paced his batting well since it was crucial for him to stay at the crease throughout the innings for GT to succeed. He took a measured approach to enable this. Towards the end, he needed someone who could bat explosively and relieve the pressure on him to anchor the innings,” he added.

“So, when he attempted to accelerate the run rate, he got out. It was unnecessary. Sai Sudharsan could have done it instead. However, I believe Sai Sudarshan will improve his strike-rate. When that happens, I think their partnership will be highly effective,” he concluded.

GT will next clash against DC on April 24.
