Yuvraj Singh dissected the options of who should be India's first-choice wicket-keeper, picked out the key player that must fire and provided some insight into the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Yuvraj Singh picks out the Indian squad for T20 World Cup

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, recently discussed India’s wicket-keeping options, key players, and the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Yuvraj’s legendary feat of hitting six consecutive sixes off Stuart Broad during the 2007 T20 World Cup still brings a smile to his face 17 years later.

The ICC announced that former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh will serve as the ambassador for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will take place in the United States and Caribbean.

Yuvraj Singh named the top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav, as the player who must perform well for India to win the title. He also emphasized that spearhead Jasprit Bumrah needs to be at his peak.

“Suryakumar Yadav is a key player for India’s chances in the T20 World Cup because he can shift the momentum in just 15 balls. His batting style gives India the ability to score quick runs even when under pressure. While Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling will also be crucial and Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling has been impressive. Yadav’s inclusion increases their odds of winning the tournament,” stated Singh.

Though Yuvraj admires how Dinesh Karthik has performed for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in this year’s IPL, he believes the veteran wicketkeeper should make India’s T20 World Cup squad only if he is assured a spot in the starting XI.

“Though DK has been batting well lately, he was picked for the 2022 T20 World Cup but didn’t get to play. If he won’t be in the starting XI this time, it may not make sense to pick him over younger options like Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson, who are in great form. While DK’s experience is valuable, if he’s picked,” he added.

Yuvraj Singh wants more explosive batters in the middle-order for the T20 World Cup. Specifically, he has identified CSK batter Shivam Dube to be picked for the World Cup.

“Would like to see Shivam Dube because he is in impressive form. Although he has struggled with consistency in the past, his recent batting performances prove that he can be a game-changing asset for the team. His inclusion could provide a much-needed spark.”

Yuvraj Singh recognizes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s value in World Cup squad. Rather than suggesting the two stars retire from international cricket, Yuvraj proposed they consider retiring from T20I’s after this World Cup and focus on other formats.

“As you age, people tend to focus on your years and overlook your abilities. These veterans have contributed greatly to Indian cricket, and should choose when to retire. After this T20 World Cup, I hope youngsters join the national team and form the core of India’s T20 squad for the next World Cup. This would ease the burden on experienced players, allowing them to prioritize other formats. Adding fresh talent into the T20 side will benefit the team for the future.”
