Former Pakistan cricketer and one of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of cricket, Shoaib Akhtar had given many sleepless nights to several world-class batsmen during his playing days.
Akhtar was known for his deadly bouncers and toe-crushing yorkers. Many legendary players and experts of the game even described Shoaib Akhtar as the toughest bowler to face. But the player who troubled him the most in his cricketing career was none other than Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan.
In his latest interview with Sportskeeda, the ‘Rawalpindi Express’ has revealed that Muralitharan was the toughest batsman he had ever bowled to.
Though Muralitharan was a tailender, batting at No. 11 for Sri Lanka, he had still troubled the former Pakistani speedster with the bat during his heydays.
Akhtar also recalled how Muttiah Muralitharan used to request him to bowl fuller deliveries, promising to give away his wicket in return.
“Muttiah Muralitharan is the toughest batsman I have bowled to. I am not kidding. He requested me not to kill him and told me that he will die if I hit him with a bouncer. He said, ‘Please pitch the ball up and I will give you the wicket away,” said the 45-year-old
“Whenever I pitched the ball up he just used to slash hard and used to tell me that he hit it by mistake,” he added.
