Mumbai Indians have made their quest for a spot in the Indian Premier League playoffs more difficult following a narrow loss to Gujarat Titans on Tuesday, May 6. In a match shortened by rain, MI were defeated by 3 wickets as Gujarat successfully chased down a target of 147 runs in 19 overs.
With seven teams still in contention for a place in the playoffs, it now seems that 16 points may not be sufficient to secure a top-four finish this season. With 14 points from 12 matches, Mumbai must secure victories in their last two games to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Following the match, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene highlighted that the team will approach remaining fixtures as playoff games, aiming to continue their strong performance in the second half of the season.
Despite a tough start, with four losses in their first five matches, Mumbai Indians have shown remarkable resilience to stay in contention. Their six-match winning streak was finally ended by a defeat against GT on Tuesday.
“Both teams made a few mistakes in the middle and we probably made more than they did. I think that’s the difference. I think we didn’t play our best, especially with the bat. I thought we were set up nicely [initially] and then, we just had to bat those last eight overs, which we didn’t do smartly,” Jayawardene said.
“We’re probably 30 runs short on that wicket. The guys bowled really well and created a lot of opportunities. So, I think that’s a good sign and we will approach every match like it’s a playoff. I’m incredibly proud of the team’s resilience, the way they fought back in that challenging situation,” he added.
Mumbai’s final two games are against Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. The team will rely on key Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah.
