The match between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians is underway at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Gujarat, batting first, got off to a poor start as Wriddhiman Saha nicked a ball drifting down the leg-side that went straight into Ishan Kishan’s gloves.
Despite the faintest of nicks, Arjun Tendulkar and keeper Ishan were confident and with their big appeal, they convinced the umpire to raise his finger. Following the umpire’s decision, Saha took a sweet time to decide whether to opt for a review and eventually opted for one, but it led to a big umpiring blunder which sparked a controversy.
Notably, Saha ignored the DRS timer and signalled for a review after the timer went off. But, the umpire still went to the third umpire to review his decision, which shocked the fans. Here is the video of the incident.
Luckily for the on-field umpire, the decision went in Mumbai Indians’ favour. Otherwise, things would have become chaotic. Meanwhile, Arjun Tendulkar took his first wicket in the powerplay in IPL 16.
Reacting to the umpire’s error, fans took to social media platforms to troll and question the existence of the DRS timer. Former Australia speedster Brett Lee wrote, “Why have the 15-sec referral rule in if the 3rd umpire doesn’t enforce it? “
Here are some of the fans’ reactions.
The fans felt that the 3rd umpire should have intervened and not proceeded with the review.
