Sunil Joshi, born in a Kannada-speaking Madhwa Brahmin family, was a dedicated cricketer who traveled 64 km daily from Gadag to Hubballi for practice during his youth. His breakthrough came in the 1995–96 Ranji Trophy season, achieving a rare double of 500 runs and 50 wickets, earning a national call-up.
A crafty left-arm spinner with a smooth action reminiscent of Bishan Bedi, Joshi played second fiddle to Anil Kumble but had notable performances, including a 10-6-6-5 spell against South Africa in the 1999 LG Cup, ranked 7th in Wisden’s top ODI bowling performances.
After retiring in 2012, he transitioned to coaching and selection roles, serving as chief selector for India’s men’s team (2020–2022) and spin bowling coach for various teams, including Punjab Kings in IPL 2023.
