Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is currently in Sri Lanka with the Indian team, has credited the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper, MS Dhoni, for improving his game. The young batsman recently revealed that it was Dhoni who backed him to bat up the order for CSK during the IPL 2020.
Gaikwad didn’t have the best of starts in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League as he was tested positive for novel coronavirus just before the start of the tournament in the UAE.
Despite being recovered from COVID-19, the Pune-born cricketer failed to score heavily with the bat at the beginning of the competition.
However, Dhoni showed immense faith in Ruturaj and backed him to perform well. The 24-year-old eventually finished that season with three back-to-back half-centuries.
IPL 2020, Gaikwad scored 204 runs in 7 games at a brilliant average of 51 and a strike rate of more than 120.
Recalling MS Dhoni’s advice ahead of the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, Ruturaj said, “Mahi Bhai always used to say not to play without seeing the name of the opponent. Success is achieved by batting according to the quality of the ball. He advised me not to fall into that trap and his advice will help me in Sri Lanka.
“He has always helped me. I was not getting a run at the beginning of IPL. The confidence that Mahi Bhai placed in me has helped me a lot,” Gaikwad told Anand Bazaar Patrika.
