The 3rd session of day 2 of the fourth Test between India and Australia is underway at the Narendra Modi stadium. The visitors are in a commanding position courtesy of centuries from Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green.
Opener Khawaja starred for the baggy greens as the 36-year-old produced a stellar knock and scored 180 (422) before getting out to Axar Patel on the first ball right after tea. Khawaja’s knock is the highest individual score in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and his innings was laced with 21 fours.
With the incredible performance, Khawaja broke an epic record and surpassed the likes of skipper Steve Smith, and former Australian players Allan border and Shane Watson.
The 36-year-old, who scored 180(422 balls), scripted the record for most balls faced in a single innings by an Australian batter in India. He broke the record held by Grahan Yallop, who faced 392 balls at Eden Gardens in 1979. The list also includes the name of Steve Smith, who played 361 balls in the Ranchi Test in 2017.
Here is the list of Australian batters with the most balls faced in a single innings.
- Usman Khawaja – 422 (Ahmedabad 2023)
- Graham Yallop – 392 (Eden Gardens, 1979)
- Steve Smith – 361 (Ranchi, 2017)
- Allan Border – 360 (Chennai, 1979)
