Umran Malik, a rising star in Indian cricket, has made a name for himself with his raw pace, frequently clocking over 150 kmph. After debuting for India in 2022, Umran faced difficulties in replicating the form that had made him one of the IPL’s most dangerous bowlers for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Reflecting on his 2023 IPL season, he shared his thoughts on being sidelined despite taking 22 wickets in the previous season.

As the Ranji Trophy season approaches, Umran Malik is preparing to represent Jammu and Kashmir. The pacer has been dedicating time to improving his fitness and sharpening his skills in local events to ensure he’s ready for the season ahead.

“I’m feeling confident. I’ve had a solid build-up heading to this Ranji season, thanks to the Buchi Babu and local tournaments. I’ve focused on maintaining my fitness and training hard. Slowly, I’ve been increasing my bowling workload to ensure I’m match-ready,” Malik said.

“I’m not feeling nervous, even though it’s been a year since I last played. My focus is on playing good cricket and doing what I do best, taking wickets,” he added.

Injuries kept Umran away from the game for a long period over the last year.

“Injuries are a part of every fast bowler’s journey. Last year, I experienced my first injury and missed the entire season. However, that break taught me a lot about managing my body. That phase is behind me now, and I feel much better physically,” Malik shared. “I’ve put in the work needed for a fast bowler. I’ve trained consistently – every morning, every evening. Because of that, I feel stronger, and I’m eager to play as much cricket as I can.”

Umran discussed working with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, who helped Rohit Sharma lose 10 kg and get in shape for the Australia series.

“Working with him has been beneficial. He ensures players stay in the right mindset. His approach to breaking things down allows you to focus on what truly matters.”

After taking 22 wickets in 14 matches during IPL 2022, Umran played only 8 games in 2023 and just one in 2024. “There was disappointment. One season I took 22 wickets, and the next I found myself on the bench. But I focused on staying motivated.”
