Overview:
Smith will take a break after the BBL before getting ready for Australia's Test series against Bangladesh and South Africa.
Former Australia captain Steve Smith is not overthinking after failing to make it to the national team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, but he is not ready to give up on the shortest format. Steve Smith, who has been consistent for the Sydney Sixers in the ongoing Big Bash League, said he wants to play in the LA Olympics 2028. Cricket has been added to the Olympics after more than 100 years. Smith said he is looking forward to be a part of the big tournaments for Australia and is keen to get ready for the Olympics.
“I always want to represent Australia in big tournaments,” Steve Smith said.
“The ship has sailed when it comes to the T20 World Cup 2026. We have two opening batters who have performed well. I am having fun here. My goal is to get on the team when the Olympics are around. I would be keen to play. If you keep doing your stuff, you never know,” he added.
Smith announced his retirement from the ODI format after the 2025 Champions Trophy as he wanted to focus on franchise cricket.
With IPL franchises not showing interest in him, he has shifted his focus to Major League Cricket in the USA and the Big Bash League in Australia. He has hit a hundred and fifty in his last three knocks in BBL 2025-26.
“I am trying to hit the ball a bit further and harder. I have to keep up with the guys who hit the ball a mile. I hit the ball in unique areas. It is nice to bat up the order. I stopped playing ODIs to play a few franchise leagues. It is tough when you don’t play regularly,” he concluded.
