Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi were engaged in a heated verbal exchange during a PSL 2021 fixture between the Lahore Qalandars and the Quetta Gladiators at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The former Pakistan skipper was batting in the penultimate over of the Gladiators’ innings when the left-arm pacer banged the ball in short. Sarfaraz tried to pull the ball, but was hit flush on his helmet and went towards the third-man region.
The right-handed batsman took the opportunity to take the single and went at the non-striker’s end and decided to have a go at the young pacer. This led to a war of words between the Pakistan teammates.
Shaheen was also pumped up and decided to respond to Sarfaraz Ahmed’s dig. He was initially returning to his bowling mark, but decided to confront Sarfaraz instead. The duo had to be separated by the umpires and players.
The incident sparked a debate over whether the youngster was right to respond aggressively to what his former captain had to say. Nonetheless, Sarfaraz had the last laugh as the Gladiators won the game by 18 runs.
This defeated dented the Qalandar’s hopes of finishing at the top of the pile in the league phase, while the Gladiators will hope to end their disappointing season on a high with more such results.
