Before the start of the three-match T20I series against New Zealand, the Men in Blue dealt a heavy blow as star opener Ruturaj Gaikwad got ruled out of the series with a wrist injury.
The 25-year-old, who last featured for Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad, had pain in his wrist, which he conveyed to the BCCI after the game, following which he checked into the NCA for treatment and advice.
Gaikwad, who scored a duck and eight runs in the Hyderabad match, has pain in his right wrist, and it is unlikely that the 25-year-old will get fit in time for the 1st T20I, which will take place in Ranchi on January 27.
A BCCI official updated about Gaikwad’s injury to Inside Sports and said, “Gaikwad is in NCA. He is undergoing scans for his wrist injury. It does not look serious, but it is unlikely that Gaikwad gets fit in time.”
Gaikwad also suffered a wrist injury against Sri Lanka. The BCCI official also stated that the apex board is unlikely to go for a replacement as India already have three openers.
