The focus has shifted to red-ball cricket as India & Australia will lock horns for the four-Test match series, which will decide India’s fate in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
The Rohit Sharma-led side need to sweep the baggy greens 4-0 or win three matches, and for that, all eyes would be on Ravichandran Ashwin as the visitors are most likely to be greeted with spin-friendly pitches, where the 36-year-old will play the most crucial role.
Ashwin, who has 449 Test wickets, loves playing against Australia as the all-rounder has taken 89 wickets against them, which is his most against a Test-playing nation. Ashwin would also look to complete his 450 wickets and is also eyeing a major Harbhajan Singh record against the Aussies.
Harbhajan is the 2nd leading wicket-taker against Australia in Tests with 95 wickets in 18 matches. Meanwhile, Ashwin, who has 89 wickets, needs just seven scalps to surpass the Turbunator’s record and will only trail behind India’s leading Test wicket-taker Anil Kumble, who has taken 111 wickets in 20 matches.
Here is the list of the highest number of wickets by an Indian against Australia in Tests.
- Anil Kumble – 111
- Harbhajan Singh – 95
- R Ashwin – 89
- Kapil Dev- 79
- Ravindra Jadeja – 63
Recently Harbhajan hogged headlines after fans trolled him for being jealous of Ashwin after he disagreed with Wasim Jaffer’s ‘Ashwin is in Australia’s mind’ remark.
