Former India batsman and member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, Yashpal Sharma passed away on Tuesday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Yashpal had played an important role in India’s first-ever World Cup win. He smashed 61 runs in the semi-final clash against England in Manchester.
Soon after the news of Yashpal Sharma’demise broke out, many past and present cricketers took to social media to pay their heartfelt tribute.
Taking to his official Twitter handle, Yashpal’s former teammate Kris Srikkanth wrote, “Sad to hear the demise of my former teammate and friend #YashpalSharma! He was one of the main heroes who helped us lifting the 1983 world cup! May his soul rest in peace.”
Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar also offered his condolences to Yashpal’s family.
“Shocked and deeply pained by the demise of Yashpal Sharma ji. Have fond memories of watching him bat during the 1983 World Cup. His contribution to Indian cricket shall always be remembered. My sincere condolences to the entire Sharma family,” Tendulkar tweeted.
Apart from the greats of the game, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences to the former cricketer’s family members.
Calling him an inspiration for the budding players, PM Modi wrote, “Shri Yashpal Sharma Ji was a much-beloved member of the Indian cricket team, including the legendary 1983 squad. He was an inspiration for teammates, fans as well as budding cricketers. Anguished by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
