Ranatunga recently claimed that India have insulted Sri Lanka by sending a second-string side for the upcoming limited-overs series which is set to get underway from July 13 in Colombo.
In the absence of the regular players, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent a team, comprising of experienced and young players, for the Sri Lanka tour with Rahul Dravid as the head coach.
However, Ranatunga wasn’t impressed with the decision as he lashed out at the Sri Lankan cricket board for hosting a ‘weak team’.
Taking a dig at the 57-year-old for his controversial remark, Kaneria has said that SLC should be thankful that the Shikhar Dhawan-led side will play the white-ball series against Lankans because it would bring them sponsors and funds.
“Sri Lankan cricket is on the decline. Look at the way they are playing the series in England. They should feel blessed that India is sending a team to help the board will be out of the financial crisis,” Kaneria said in his latest YouTube video.
“Ranatunga has made the statement just to stay in the limelight. India is one such nation that contains 50-60 players and can make two international teams. It is sad to hear such a statement from a cricketer of your stature,” the 40-year-old added.
