Overview:

The franchise needs to make multiple foreign signings rather than relying on just one high-profile acquisition.

Delhi Capitals (DC) are looking to fill key gaps in their squad in the IPL 2026 auction, particularly at the top of the order and their overseas roster. The team is now without reliable openers following the departures of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Faf du Plessis. With only three overseas players currently in their squad, the franchise needs to make multiple foreign signings rather than relying on just one high-profile acquisition.

The IPL auction in Abu Dhabi on December 16 will feature 350 players, including 240 Indians. Delhi have a purse of Rs 21.80 crore, and they can sign eight players, with five of them being overseas. The highest reserve price is Rs 2 crore, and 40 players are listed in this bracket.

There’s a possibility of KL Rahul opening the innings with Abishek Porel, although it’s not confirmed. Nitish Rana is expected to take charge at No. 3, while the middle order, comprising Tristan Stubbs, Sameer Rizvi, Ashutosh Sharma, and Axar Patel, provides much-needed composure for Delhi heading into the auction.

Delhi Capitals need power hitters and a reliable wicket-taking seamer for IPL 2026. Despite Mitchell Starc’s strong performance in IPL 2025, T Natarajan’s fitness and Mukesh Kumar’s inconsistency showed gaps in the seam attack. With eight opening pairs last season, stability at the top is crucial. To ease Rahul’s workload, Delhi require quality overseas batters. The auction offers an opportunity to fill these gaps and strengthen the team.

Top 5 Players Delhi Capitals Should Target:

Ben Duckett

Delhi Capitals need a dynamic top-order batter, as KL Rahul and Abishek Porel often take time to settle. Duckett fits the bill with his aggressive play, using the powerplay to create early pressure. His skills against both pace and spin, along with strong performances in sub-continent conditions, make him an ideal candidate. In his recent T20I series, Duckett scored 115 runs from three matches, striking at 169.12, demonstrating the aggressive batting DC needs.

David Miller

David Miller, with a career tally of over 3,000 IPL runs, is known for his knack for finishing games in tense moments. After a relatively quiet IPL 2025, he re-enters the auction as a player who brings invaluable experience, cool-headedness, and sharp cricketing strategies, particularly in the death overs. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Miller’s ability to dominate the final overs could make him a key threat for opposing teams.

Jacob Duffy

Jacob Duffy’s recent success in white-ball cricket with New Zealand makes him an appealing choice for Delhi. His standout performance in the fifth T20I against West Indies, where he took 4 for 35, including a hat-trick of wickets in one over, demonstrated his ability to dismantle top orders. Duffy finished as the series’ top wicket-taker with 10 wickets at an impressive 12.10, earning Player of the Series honors. With 35 wickets in 20 T20I innings this year, he brings the consistency Delhi need for early breakthroughs in the powerplay.

Matthew Forde

West Indies all-rounder Matthew Forde is quickly emerging as a top seam-bowling all-rounder. His precise new-ball bowling and reliable lower-order hitting, including a record-setting fastest ODI fifty, make him a strong T20 asset. While not as explosive as Andre Russell, Forde offers more control and clean hitting at the death. His dual role as a powerplay seamer and late-overs hitter makes him a valuable and flexible option for IPL 2026.

Matheesha Pathirana

Matheesha Pathirana’s release was a surprising move, but he enters the IPL 2026 auction as one of the best death bowlers available. Known for his consistent yorkers, he is a valuable asset in the final overs and is expected to bounce back after the 2025 season.

While CSK might seek to bring back the Sri Lankan speedster, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants are expected to provide stiff competition, with both teams facing issues in the death overs last season. Pathirana’s inclusion would address Delhi’s late-overs woes and add much-needed strength to their bowling attack.
