Having failed to qualify for the play-offs in the IPL 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking to change their fortunes in the Indian Premier League 2021. The Eoin Morgan-led side finished fifth in the 13th edition of IPL with seven wins from 14 games.
Ahead of the upcoming tournament, former KKR skipper, Gautam Gambhir pointed out the glaring weaknesses in the team. The 39-year-old feels that KKR lack firepower in their squad when it comes to Indian batting.
Reviewing the IPL 2021 auction on Star Sports Network, the former India batsman said, “Indian batting is a huge problem for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Apart from Gill and to a certain extent Nitish Rana, I don’t see so much quality. Karthik bats too low in the batting lineup, he has had a horrible season last time around.”
Gambhir also highlighted that the two-time champions are heavily reliant on their skipper Morgan and all-rounder Andre Russell in the batting department.
“That is the reason they will be very much dependent on Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell. Andre Russell needs to fire if they need to be competitive. They need to win the tournament, it’s been 6-7 years since they haven’t won the tournament. You can look very good on paper but they haven’t been that consistent,” the IPL winning captain added.
KKR roped in Bangladesh all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan for INR 3.2 crore in the mini-auction on Thursday. The 33-year-old, who faced a one-year ban by the ICC, had a base price of Rs 2 crore. The franchise also bought Harbhajan Singh and Karun Nair, apart from a few uncapped players at the auction.
