Gautam Gambhir has said that he never thought that the Delhi Capitals would go for the Australian batsman Steve Smith in the IPL 2021 auction.

Former India opener and two-time IPL winning captain, Gautam Gambhir has said that he never thought that the Delhi Capitals would go for the Australian batsman Steve Smith in the player auction for the Indian Premier League 2021 in Chennai.

The 39-year-old pointed out that DC already have a star-studded batting line-up with the presence of  Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Shimron Heymyer and they never needed Smith in their side.

Speaking on Star Sports Network, Gambhir said, “Hetmyer probably will play in the middle order. They have got Dhawan who is in very good form. They have got Shaw, Rahane, Iyer, Pant plus they will definitely play Hetmyer and Stoinis.”

“I actually never thought that they would go for someone like Steve Smith. They never needed him,” he added.

The 32-year-old batsman, who was released by the Rajasthan Royals after his average outing in the IPL 2020 in UAE, was roped in by the Delhi-based franchise for Rs 2.2 crore. Smith went into the auction at a base price of Rs 2 crore

Apart from Smith, Delhi Capitals also purchased England all-rounder, Tom Curran for Rs 5.25 crore, who was their most expensive buy at the IPL 2021 auction.

DC retained players: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, R Ashwin, Lalit Yadav, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Pravin Dubey, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Woakes, Daniel Sams

Players bought: Tom Curran (5.25 crore), Steve Smith (2.2 crore), Sam Billings (2 crore), Umesh Yadav (1 crore), Ripal Patel (20 lakh), Vishnu Vinod (20 lakh), Lukman Meriwala (20 lakh), M Siddharth (20 lakh)
