Rohit Sharma Sunil Gavaskar
Rohit Sharma is likely to lead India in the first Test match against New Zealand as the regular skipper Virat Kohli has asked the BCCI for an extended break.

Former India skipper and one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket, Sunil Gavaskar, has backed Rohit Sharma to perform well in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting from August 4.

Gavaskar wants the swashbuckling India opener to replicate his 2019 ODI World Cup form in the series against the Joe Root-led side.

Rohit had a memorable outing during the showpiece event in England as he smashed five centuries – most by any batsman in a single World Cup edition.

Gavaskar feels that Rohit Sharma has the capability to score big hundreds on English soil and it should not surprise anyone if the 34-year-old repeats his World Cup success.

Speaking to PTI, the 71-year-old said, “We saw Rohit Sharma score five incredible hundreds in the World Cup in England two years back. The century he got against South Africa was on a tough pitch and cold conditions and he made the adjustments beautifully.

“This time around, he is even more experienced so don’t be surprised if he repeats that performance in this series too,” he added.

Notably, Hitman played his first Test in English conditions as a Test opener during the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand last month.

However, he returned with scores of 34 and 30, failing to capitalize after getting decent starts in both the innings at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
