The Sixers made it to the Qualifier but were defeated by the Perth Scorchers, who won by 48 runs. Next, they’ll face the Hobart Hurricanes in the Challenger on January 23 at the SCG, hoping to stay in the title race.
Former Australia all-rounder Mark Waugh has called on the Sydney Sixers to make hard calls in Big Bash League 2025–26, even floating the option of leaving out Babar Azam after a lean run.
A lack of reliable partner at the top has placed undue pressure on Steve Smith, with other batters failing to score consistently. To address the issue, Waugh has called for a reshaped batting order, suggesting Daniel Hughes, Jordan Silk and Moises Henriques as potential opening options to bring greater attacking intent and stability early on.
"I'm going to have to drop Babar Azam."

“I believe they need a bit of tough love and a shake-up in their batting lineup because, at the moment, it heavily relies on Steve Smith. Sam Curran helped them out of a difficult situation in another match, but he’s no longer available. Right now, there aren’t many players in good form, so I’m considering bringing in either Daniel Hughes or Jordan Silk,” Waugh shared with Fox Sports.
“Sadly, I’m going to drop Babar Azam. I recognize he’s world-class, but he hasn’t been consistent enough at the top of the order. When you’re aiming to win this tournament, you need your openers to be performing, and so far, he hasn’t quite delivered,” he added.
“As a new opener, you could consider Moises Henriques or bring in either Hughes or Silk. That’s the direction I’m leaning towards,” Waugh mentioned. This change could help the Sixers bolster their lineup and improve their chances in the vital playoff stage of the tournament.
The Sydney Sixers had an impressive BBL season, securing second place on the table, thanks to standout performances from Steve Smith and Sam Curran, including a commanding 47-run victory over Sydney Thunder.
