Sunil Gavaskar not in favour of Yo Yo Test

The BCCI recently conducted a meeting where they decided to re-introduce the Yo-Yo test, which got introduced under Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri’s tenure.

The Yo-Yo test set a new fitness standard in the Indian side, as players were required to register a particular score to get selected. The rule somehow disappeared during COVID-19 without much discussion. Meanwhile, its re-introduction has caused a stir on social media.

Looking at a few out-of-shape players in the Indian side, the decision might occur as the need of the hour. However, several experts have spoken against it, and the latest to weigh in his opinion is Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar.

Gavaskar opined that fitness parameters are different for each skill set and should not be brought down to one Test.

“Fitness is an individual thing and one size does not fit all. The Pacers need a different level than spinners. Wicketkeepers need an even higher level and batter the least. So, the parameters are set for everybody, and not according to one’s speciality.”

“Cricket fitness has to be the prime consideration. Also, it would be revealing to see if fitness tests get done in the presence of media, then we would know if a player is ‘yo yo’ or ‘ no no’.”
