Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews on Wednesday pulled out of the upcoming limited-overs series against India, citing personal reasons. The Shikhar Dhawan-led side is all set to lock horns with Sri Lanka in three ODIs and as many T20 Internationals in Colombo.
Confirming the news, the Sri Lankan cricket board announced that 29 players, out of the 30 members nominated by the selectors for the white-ball series against India, have signed the Tour Contract.
“Angelo Mathews, who was included in the respective 30-member squad, requested Sri Lanka Cricket to relieve him from National Duties, owing to personal reasons, until further notice,” SLC said in its latest statement.
Notably, Mathews was not a part of the Sri Lanka squad that recently toured England for the limited-overs series. He was last seen in national jersey during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home.
Last month, Sri Lanka players had refused to sign tour contracts for the England series amid an ongoing tussle with the national board over an alleged lack of transparency in the central contracts.
The visitors eventually had an awful outing in England as they suffered 0-3 defeat in T20Is and a 0-2 loss in the ODIs.
Sri Lanka will be looking to perform well against the Indian team in the upcoming series on their home turf.
