The Delhi Capitals had a memorable season in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League as they made it to their first IPL finale in the UAE. But the team missed its maiden title by a whisker as Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians emerged victorious for the fifth time in the extravagant tournament.
In order to strengthen their batting line-up for the IPL 2021, DC managed to acquire the services of one of the best batsmen in modern-day cricket, Steve Smith. The former Australia captain, who had a base price of Rs 2 crore, was roped in by the Delhi-based franchise for Rs 2.2 crore.
Under the leadership of Smith, Rajasthan Royals (RR) had a miserable outing in the IPL 2020 as they finished last in the points table. In addition, Smith also failed to put a good show with the bat in the UAE. He finished the tournament with just 311 runs in 14 games at a poor average of 25.91 and a strike rate of 131.22.
Owing to his mediocre performance last year, Royals released Steve Smith ahead of the mini-auction in Chennai.
However, the 32-year-old is excited to join his new team and is looking forward to guiding Shreyas Iyer-led side to the elusive IPL title.
The Delhi-based franchise recently shared a video message from Smith saying, “I am really excited about joining the team this year. I think it is a great squad and I am looking forward to getting there and creating some amazing memories. Hopefully will help the team go one better than last year.”
Soon after DC posted the clip it caught the attention of former India cricketer and current batting coach of Punjab Kings, Wasim Jaffer.
Taking a cheeky dig at Smith’s video, Jaffer posted a hilarious meme and tweeted, “aise kyu dekh rahe ho? (why are you looking like this?)”.
