They say age is just a number when it comes to love and some of the prominent personalities from the cricket fraternity have proved that right.
Be it Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali or Wasim Akram and his better-half Shaneira Thompson, many popular couples took some bold decisions in their personal lives and have shown the world that nothing really matters when two people are in love. Despite the massive age gap with their partners, many of them have been able to lead happy lives.
Let’s take a look at some of the cricketers who share a huge age difference with their wives.
1. Sachin Tendulkar and Anjali Mehta
Sachin Tendulkar is unarguably one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. His success in world cricket is second to none. While everyone knows about Sachin’s professional highs, the Master Blaster has always been an introvert when it comes to his personal life.
Sachin met his wife Anjali Mehta for the first time when he was just 17 years old. Back then, Anjali wasn’t a great follower of cricket and had now information about the achievements of the legendary India batsman. The two met each other at the Mumbai airport.
While Sachin was returning from the England tour, Anjali had gone to pick up her mother. They both felt an instant connection at that time. Later, the duo slowly started seeing each other and shared a long-distance relationship before they got hitched in 1995. Notably, Anjali is 6 years older than her husband Sachin.
2. Shikhar Dhawan and Ayesha Mukherjee
Swashbuckling India opener Shikhar Dhawan and his wife Ayesha Mukherjee also have a quite interesting love story. Ayesha had settled in Australia at quite a young age and had two children from her first marriage. It was Shikhar who stumbled upon her on Facebook.
The flamboyant cricketer was scrolling down his Facebook feed and found that Ayesha was a mutual friend of veteran India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.
After stalking Ayesha’s profile, the southpaw was completely bowled over by her looks. Despite knowing her marital status, Shikhar couldn’t hold back his love for this Bengali beauty.
The couple got engaged in 2009 before they tied the knot in 2012.
Notably, Ayesha is 10 years older than Shikhar but that hasn’t impacted their love for each other.
3. Glenn McGrath and Sara Leonardi
When Glenn McGrath’s first wife Jane passed away in 2008 after battling breast cancer, the former Australian pacer decided that he would never love anyone else. But destiny had different plans.
As the Aussie was trying to move on in his life, he met Sara Leonardi during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2009. The duo met at a party in Cape Town in April 2009. After dating for about seven months, Sara and McGrath tied the knot in November 2010.
Sara is 12 years younger than Glenn McGrath. She has played a massive role in helping the former cricketer get back to normal life after the loss of his first wife.
4. Wasim Akram and Shaneira Thompson
Former Pakistan player Wasim Akram is considered to be one of the greatest bowlers in the history of cricket. The legendary pacer married Huma Mufti in 1995 and they were together for almost 15 years before Huma died due to multiple organ failures in 2009.
After four years of Huma’s demise, Akram met Shaneira Thompson and fell in love. He went to Melbourne to participate in a local poker tournament at Crown Casino where he met Shaneira. The duo got married in 2013 in Lahore.
However, it is quite astounding that Shaneira Thompson is 17 years younger than the former Pakistan captain.
5. Shoaib Akhtar and Rubab Khan
Another legendary speedster on the list is Shoaib Akhtar. The former Pakistan cricketer is best known for his bold and fierce personality. He was rated as one of the deadliest pacers during his heydays.
However, he is a man with a golden heart off the field which impressed Rubab Khan. The couple tied the knot in 2014 in a private wedding ceremony that was attended by their close friends and family.
Their marriage talks started when Akhtar was performing Hajj in Saudi Arabia in 2013. That is where the Rawalpindi Express met Rubab’s father and asked him to find a girl for him.
But in what came as a big surprise for Shoaib Akhtar, Rubab’s father offered his daughter’s hand to him.
Despite being 18 years younger than him, Rubab agreed to marry the Pakistani legend.
