India and New Zealand engaged in a nail-biting thriller as the Men in Blue won a high-scoring game by 12 runs. Shubman Gill was the difference with his scintillating double hundred.
The 23-year-old hogged all the limelight for his 208(148), which made him the youngest cricketer to score a double hundred, surpassing Ishan Kishan’s record, which he made against Bangladesh in December 2022.
Before the start of the Sri Lanka series, Rohit Sharma made it clear that Gill will be preferred over Ishan Kishan for the vacant opening slot, which drew a lot of flak. However, Gill silenced the critics with his knock.
After the match, Rohit, Ishan, and Gill gathered for a short interview, where the MI duo welcomed Gill into the 200 club. During their interaction, the trio were having fun and joking around each other when Rohit, in a light-hearted manner, asked Ishan, “Why did he sit out for three games despite a double hundred.”
Kishan’s reply left skipper Rohit and Gill in split. The 24-year-old replied, “Bhaiya yeh to app bataaoge, captain toh aap the na (Only you can answer this question, brother. You are the captain).” Ishan’s answer went viral on the internet.
India will square off against New Zealand for the 2nd ODI on Saturday, 21st January, at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, Raipur.
