After the emphatic win against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 finals, India climbed a place to rank second in the ICC team rankings. Despite winning the continental cup, the Men in Blue could not claim the top spot and are tied on points with Pakistan, who are first in the rankings.
Despite crashing out of the Asia Cup 2023 in the Super Four round, Pakistan claimed the No.1 rank because Australia suffered a 2-3 series loss against South Africa. However, India now stand a chance to claim the No.1 spot ahead of the World Cup.
The Rohit Sharma-led side need to win the three-match series against Australia 2-1 to become the No.1 ranked ODI team ahead of the World Cup. The Men in Blue can also temporarily take the No.1 spot if they win the series opener game in Mohali.
The three-match series against Australia will commence on September 22, and the management will release the squad on September 18. Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar will reveal the squad during a virtual meet at 8:30 p.m.
