Rishabh Pant has rejoined Team India which is preparing for the forthcoming 2023 Asia Cup. The team’s training camp, taking place at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) facilities in Alur, Karnataka, is gearing up the players for the tournament. Before departing for Sri Lanka later this week, the team is undergoing rigorous training at the NCA.
A noteworthy event unfolded on the fifth day of the camp when Rishabh Pant, who has been recuperating from a severe car accident last December, graced the camp with his presence. This marks Pant’s first interaction with the Indian team since the unfortunate accident. Pant’s engagement during the session involved conversations with fellow Indian players and discussions with head coach Rahul Dravid.
Presently undergoing rehabilitation for his injuries at the NCA in Bengaluru, Pant’s absence from the team for eight months was felt a lot. The team missed him in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) and the 2023 World Cup. He is one of the best players, especially in Test cricket. His injury made it hard for the team to find a good replacement for his wicketkeeping role.
The events leading up to this reunion trace back to December 30, 2022, when Pant’s car met with an accident. While en route to surprise his mother, the car collided with a divider, overturned multiple times, and eventually caught fire. Pant’s prompt escape from the vehicle saved him from the explosion, although he did sustain multiple injuries, including a knee injury that required surgery.
Looking ahead, it appears unlikely that Pant will regain full fitness in time for the 2023 World Cup. Despite the absence of an official return date, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed last month that Pant has been making substantial strides in his recovery journey.
