Rajasthan Royals (RR) is a franchise cricket team based in Jaipur, Rajasthan, that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Founded in 2008, it is one of the initial eight IPL franchises. The franchise is currently owned by Manoj Badale-led Emerging Media IPL Ltd, which holds a 65% stake. Key minority stakeholders include Lachlan Murdoch and RedBird Capital Partners.
Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008 under the captaincy of Shane Warne. They later qualified for the playoffs in 2013 and 2015. In 2013, S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested on the charges of alleged spot-fixing. Also, one of the owners was arrested for illegal betting, due to which the team was suspended for 2 years and could not feature in the 2016 and 2017 seasons of the IPL.
In 2018, the Rajasthan Royals returned to the IPL after two years of suspension and qualified for the playoffs by securing fourth place with 14 points. In 2022, under the captaincy of Sanju Samson and the leadership of coach Kumar Sangakkara Rajasthan Royals were the runners-up of the tournament.
The team is based at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. It was named after Sawai Man Singh II, the former Maharaja of Jaipur. It is situated at one corner of the PKMB. The stadium seats 30,000. The ACA Stadium, Barsapara Cricket Stadium, is also scheduled to host some of the home games for the Royals. The maximum capacity is around 50,000 spectators. It is owned and operated by the Assam Cricket Association.
