It was Australia’s show against England in the just-concluded Ashes. The hosts won the assignment by a margin of 4-1, with Mitchell Starc and Travis Head leading the bowling and batting charts, respectively. The hosts secured a 5-wicket win in the fifth and final Test on Day 5 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Chasing 160 runs, the Steve Smith-led team completed the task in 31.2 overs with five wickets in hand.
England never looked threatening despite the game going into the fifth day. Although Jacob Bethell scored 154 runs for the English side, the remaining batters were ordinary. On the other hand, centuries by Head and Smith in the first innings had put Australia miles ahead of their rivals.
Head posted 163 and 29 and was named the Player of the Match. The southpaw scored 629 runs in 10 innings at an average of 62.90, laced with three hundreds.
“It was not easy to open the innings. It was nice to face the new ball and score runs. I scored a couple of hundreds in the first three Tests when everything was on the line. It was nice to finish the series on a high note,” Travid Head said.
Starc was clinical throughout the series, taking 31 wickets in 10 innings at an average of 19.93. He was adjudged the Player of the Series, with the veteran getting the Compton-Miller medal.
Starc was also declared the Player of the Match in the first two Tests.
“It is great to be a part of the team. The body is holding together, and things are going ok. Between Scotty, Nes and me, we were not on the younger side of things, but we performed as a group,” Mitchell Starc said.
