Sunil Narine celebrates after achieving a historic milestone in IPL 2025.
Sunil Narine smoked RCB that day in 2021 burying their hopes of qualifying further.

Sunil Narine resumed his outstanding form with the bat in the opening match of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Saturday (March 22).

Despite a slow start, Narine’s explosive knock of 44 from just 26 balls, which featured five boundaries and three sixes, proved pivotal. He formed a solid 103-run partnership off 53 balls with KKR’s captain, Ajinkya Rahane, who took charge during the powerplay. However, both players were dismissed in quick succession.

Narine made history during the innings by hitting his 100th six in IPL history. At 36, he became only the third player ever to achieve both 100 sixes and more than 100 wickets in the tournament. Narine has now taken 180 wickets in his IPL career, joining Ravindra Jadeja and Andre Russell in this remarkable feat.

Notably, Narine and Russell are the only players in IPL history to accomplish this unique double for the same team. Narine also became the first player in IPL history to take over 150 wickets and hit more than 100 sixes for a single team. While Jadeja has completed this double, he has done so for multiple teams. The all-rounder has hit 73 sixes and taken as many wickets for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Among those approaching this milestone, Axar Patel, with 79 sixes and more than 100 wickets, is also close.

Among players who have taken more than 150 wickets, Dwayne Bravo is no longer an active contender, having retired from IPL cricket. Ravichandran Ashwin, with only 28 sixes, is far from reaching the 100 sixes mark. It remains highly unlikely that anyone will achieve the elusive double of 150 wickets and 100 sixes for the same team anytime soon. For a player to match Narine’s achievement of both milestones for a single team seems incredibly distant at this point.

Narine joined KKR in 2012 and has been retained by the franchise before every IPL mega auction.
