After being left out for the West Indies tour and England tour in 2021, in an interview, Bhanuka criticized Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) authorities for their inconsistent policies and the mistreatment he received due to his under-par fitness level. In the interview, he also insisted that the on-field performances of players should be prioritized instead of the fitness levels of players while forming squads. In reciprocation to Bhanuka’s outburst, Sri Lanka cricket head coach Mickey Arthur criticized Rajapaksa and called him a “comfort zone cricketer,” claiming that Bhanuka had failed to comply with the skinfold tests required to qualify to play in international cricket matches.
