Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan reckons young Mumbai Indians middle-order batsman Tilak Varma is a bright investment from the franchise.

Tilak Varma played a sensational innings against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022. The 19-year-old went after the renowned bowlers and accumulated 61 off just 33 balls. He hit 5 sixes and 3 fours in his knock.

Varma’s father, Namboori Nagaraju, is an electrician in Hyderabad who couldn’t afford his son’s dream of becoming a cricketer.

His coach Salam Bayash took care of Tilak’s expenses and provided him with good training. He also arranged all the equipment for the talented young player.

He had to go through a lot before reaching a stage when he had the wealthy franchise owners fighting for his name. The 19-year-old’s name was on the uncapped players’ list in the 2022 IPL mega auction, and Mumbai Indians won the bidding war after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals to bag his services for Rs 1.7 crore.

Varma had a base price of 20 lakh. His parents were happy when they got to know about the selection of their son. The Hyderabad cricketer was a part of the Indian team that won the U-19 ODI World Cup earlier this year.

“I once broke my bat, but my father couldn’t buy a new one despite promising me several times. We were not financially sound. When my coach saw this, he brought me everything I needed.”
