Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has demanded a central contract straightaway for Umran Malik as he feels the 22-year-old will be successful in Test cricket.

Malik, the fastest Indian bowler ever, has taken 21 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 20 and economy rate of 8.93.

Playing his first full season, Malik has already taken a five-wicket haul, but it is his raw pace that has troubled the batsmen.

“Central contract straightway,” Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out. “Keep him in the mix and don’t leave him out. He will get better once he plays with Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah,” he added.

“Once he gets a wicket, he becomes dangerous. You don’t want him to cut down on his pace. I promise you, this guy is going to be a handful in red-ball cricket. It is going to be a serious attack with Bumrah, Shami, Siraj and Malik.”
