England's Saqib Mahmood declined an offer to play in the Indian Premier League 2022 and opted to participate in a first-class game for Lancashire.

England’s Saqib Mahmood declined an offer to play in the Indian Premier League 2022 and opted to participate in a first-class game for Lancashire in the County Championship.

The 25-year-old pacer had an opportunity to play in the cash-rich league as an overseas replacement player, but he wanted to improve his red-ball game.

Mahmood made his Test debut against the West Indies in the recently concluded series. He took six wickets at an average of 22.83.

“I turned down an IPL offer just to be playing county cricket and improve my red-ball credentials. While we were out in the Caribbean, I got an offer,” Mahmood said at a press conference at Emirates Old Trafford.

“I spoke to a couple of the guys and decided to focus on red-ball cricket. Hopefully, that can highlight my will to play Test cricket and give myself the best chance by performing for Lancashire,” he added.

Saqib Mahmood said that he decided after speaking to teammate Ben Stokes, who opted out of the league this season ahead of the auction.
