The Mumbai Indians (MI) will face the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in game number 9 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Saturday, April 2. This will be the first match of the double header. MI and RR began their IPL 2022 journeys in the opposite fashion. Mumbai lost to the Delhi Capitals (DC) by four wickets, failing to defend a total of 177. Rajasthan batted first and put up a 200-plus score on the board. They then shone with the ball and claimed a 61-run win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). As MI take on RR, here are five player battles to watch out for.

1. Rohit Sharma vs Trent Boult: This battle has played out in international cricket numerous times. However, Rohit Sharma and Trent Boult meeting in opposite camps in the IPL is a strange feeling. But that is the case. The MI captain will be up against his former teammate, who is now with Rajasthan. Boult has troubled Rohit with the deliveries that nip back in from over the wicket. In fact, he has a weakness against left-armers when the ball comes in. Boult will be well aware of the same. He will look to trap Rohit again with the delivery angling in. Will the MI skipper have a riposte?

2. Ishan Kishan vs Prasidh Krishna: The battle of the young guns at the top of the order. While Rohit and Boult are experienced campaigners, Ishan Kishan and Prasidh Krishna bring youth and exuberance to both teams and, above all, prodigious talent. Ishan hammered a superb fifty in the last match against DC, taking on all the bowlers. On the other hand, Krishna impressed with his pace against SRH batters and made a serious impact. When the two come face to face on Saturday, there will be an explosion of flair. The winner of this battle could have a significant impact on the final result.

3. Jos Buttler vs Jasprit Bumrah: What a mouth-watering prospect in store. RR opener Jos Buttler is as destructive a batter as one can find in the T20 game. He has all the strokes in the book to unsettle the best of bowlers and, on his day, can be pretty much unstoppable. MI will need Jasprit Bumrah to do well at the top to raise their chances of winning. His battle against Buttler will be particularly significant. He has the pace, the yorker, as well as the short ball to unsettle the England keeper-batter. Bumrah had a rare off-day against DC. So he will be keen to fight back.

4. Sanju Samson vs Murugan Ashwin: RR skipper Sanju Samson loves getting off to a brilliant start in the IPL. Almost every season he starts with a bang. Last year, he smacked a superb hundred against Punjab, and this season he hammered a fifty against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Samson looks in amazing form with the bat and will be keen to continue his good run against Mumbai as well. Leg-spinner Murugan Ashwin was MI’s standout bowler against Delhi with figures of 2 for 14. He got the wickets of Tim Seifert and Mandeep Singh in one over to bring Mumbai back in the game. Samson loves going after the spinners. Will he succeed in getting the better of Ashwin as well?

5. Kieron Pollard vs Yuzvendra Chahal: MI big-hitter Kieron Pollard fell cheaply against DC. He looked a little unsettled with not much support in the middle and lower order. However, with Suryakumar Yadav back, he can play with a bit more freedom. Pollard will look to attack the bowlers in the second half. He is likely to come up against RR leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The bowler looked good against SRH and has all the variations in the bank to trouble anyone. His tussle with Pollard could be an intriguing one.
