The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take on the Gujarat Titans (GT) in game 35 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. After an impressive start, Kolkata have slipped to the seventh position in the IPL 2022 points table, having lost their last three matches in a row. In their last match, they went down to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven runs in a high-scoring encounter. Gujarat are well-placed at No.2 in the points table, with five wins from six matches. In their last game, they pulled off a brilliant win, coming back from nowhere to beat the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three wickets. Here are five player battles to watch out for in KKR vs GT clash.

1. Aaron Finch vs Mohammed Shami: Aaron Finch made a poor debut for KKR in the match against SRH last week, looking completely out of sorts. However, he came up with a brilliant fifty to kick off the team’s hunt for a massive chase against the Royals. Finch was in superb big-hitting form as he struck nine fours and two sixes in his 28-ball 58. Beyond being a meme favorite, Finch is a dangerous T20 batter if he is in the mood. Experienced pacer Mohammed Shami has been GT’s strike force at the start of the innings. He has constantly claimed the big wickets early. Finch will definitely be a big one for GT against KKR.

2. Shubman Gill vs Umesh Yadav: Young GT opener Shubman Gill played a couple of fantastic knocks at the start of the tournament. He looked in sublime touch and had been among the strong contenders for the Orange Cap. However, in the last three matches, he has struggled, registering scores of 7, 13 and 0. GT are heavily dependent on Gill at the start of the innings since his opening partners haven’t been delivering. Can he rediscover his form? Umesh Yadav too has gone a bit off the boil after a wonderful start. He has been leaking runs in the last couple of matches. Like Gill, Yadav too is crucial for KKR at the start. An interesting contest between two players looking to rediscover rhythm.

3. Shreyas Iyer vs Rashid Khan: KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer has had an up and down time in the IPL. There have been some impressive innings’ interspersed with some poor ones. But in the chase against RR, he demonstrated what a dangerous player he is. Until he was at the crease, KKR looked in control of a huge chase. Spinners have, without doubt, troubled Iyer in this IPL. GT will use leggie Rashid Khan as a match-up. What would be intriguing to see is how Iyer tackles this challenge. Remember, in the last match as well, he was trapped by the leg-spin of Yuzvendra Chahal.

4. Hardik Pandya vs Sunil Narine: GT skipper Hardik Pandya has been in sublime form in IPL 2022. He missed the last match due to injury, but should be back. Before sitting out against the Royals, he had hammered half-centuries in back-to-back matches. What was ominous was the manner in which he eased to 87 not out against the Royals. In the middle overs, Hardik will be up against Sunil Narine. The KKR spinner has given, literally, nothing away even as the other bowlers have been taken to the cleaners. Can Hardik break Narine’s brilliant run?

5. Andre Russell vs Lockie Ferguson: Andre Russell has been in scintillating big-hitting form at the end of the innings. He had a rare failure against RR and it had a big impact on the game. KKR will hope he can have a big impact in the death overs. Lockie Ferguson is someone who can knock over Russell cheaply if he gets his yorkers or pacy deliveries right. Whichever way this contest swings could be a crucial factor in the game.
