The Kolkata Knight Riders are on a roll in their opening game of IPL 2022 against Chennai Super Kings.
After winning the toss, new skipper Shreyas Iyer opened the bowling with Umesh Yadav, and the decision paid dividends for the two-time champions as the pacer dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad for a duck.
Gaikwad won the Orange Cap last season, and getting his wicket was a big relief for the team.
However, the start was not good for Umesh, who started with a no-ball and bowled a wide to go with it. Then, however, he got rid of Ruturaj, which was his seventh wicket, the first over of an IPL innings, first since 2018.
Overall, he has taken seven wickets at an average of 19.6, with a strike rate of 24.
Another impressive record that Umesh registered was that he became only the fourth bowler to pick up a wicket in the first over of an IPL season. Before him, Brett Lee, Chaminda Vaas, Iqbal Abdullah had done it.
Vaas dismissed KKR batter Manoj Tiwary while playing for Deccan Chargers.
Abdullah, playing for KKR in 2011, took the wicket of Srikanth Aniruddha of CSK. Playing for KKR, Brett Lee knocked over Delhi Capitals’ Unmukt Chand in 2013.
