The Indian Premier League IPL (2022) is six weeks old now. If we look at the points table, the Gujarat Titans (GT) are on top with 16 points from 11 games despite losing their last two matches. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are second with 14 points after 10 games. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) have also lost two games recently. Still, they are third with 12 points from 10 matches. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are also on 12 points, but they have played one game extra. Three teams – the Delhi Capitals (DC), the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) – are locked at 10 points in the second half. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) remain at the bottom though MI have won their last two games. Here’s the IPL 2022 team of the week.
Openers: David Warner (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad
After falling cheaply against Lucknow, Delhi opener David Warner came up against his former franchise SRH in what was a much-awaited contest. He was clearly waiting for this moment. Warner responded with an unbeaten 92 off 58 balls. He never looked in any trouble at all, smacking 12 fours and three sixes. DC posted 207 batting first, and Warner was the easy choice for Player of the Match. He will captain the team of the week.
CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a brilliant 99 off 57 against SRH. He smacked six fours and as many sixes but was unlucky not to reach a hundred. It was a terrific effort nonetheless. He followed up the effort with a fluent 28 against RCB.
Middle-order: Devon Conway, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David
Gaikwad’s opening partner also finds a place in the team of the week. He was in sublime form in the team’s two matches. The left-hander struck an unbeaten 85 off 55 balls against SRH and followed it up with a fighting 56 against RCB in a losing cause.
Veteran Wriddhiman Saha is the keeper-batter in the team. He followed his 21 against PBKS with a brilliant 55 off 40 balls against MI. It should have come in a winning cause, but Gujarat choked at the end of their chase.
The Mumbai duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Tim David find a place in the team of the week. Yadav’s sublime 51 led MI to their maiden win in IPL 2022 in the match against RR. David made fine contributions in both of Mumbai’s wins. He followed up his unbeaten 20 off 9 against RR with 44 not out off 21 against GT, proving what a big mistake the franchise made by dropping him earlier in the tournament. Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran also came up with excellent batting efforts, but missed out to David due to the limit of four overseas players.
All-rounder: Moeen Ali
CSK’s Moeen Ali is the only all-rounder in the team of this week. He made a comeback to the playing XI following injury and had an instant impact. The 34-year-old claimed 2 for 28 against RCB and followed it up with 34 with the bat in a losing cause.
Bowlers: Khaleel Ahmed, Mohsin Khan, Mukesh Choudhary, Murugan Ashwin
Khaleel Ahmed claimed 3 for 30 in DC’s win over SRH. His victims were Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram and Sean Abbott. Mohsin Khan came up with a man of the match-winning effort for LSG against DC. His 4 for 16 included David Warner, Rishabh Pant, Rovman Powell and Shardul Thakur.
It was another good week for Mukesh Choudhary. The Chennai left-arm seamer picked up four wickets against SRH. He dismissed Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi, Shashank Singh and Washington Sundar. MI leggie Murugan Ashwin is the main spinner. He returned to the playing XI with 2 for 29 against Gujarat. Ashwin turned the tide by dismissing Shubman Gill and Saha in one over after the openers added 106.
