Gujarat were the most consistent side right through the tournament, while Rajasthan were always second best.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 came to an end on Sunday, May 29, with the Gujarat Titans (GT) getting the better of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven wickets in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This was the third time in IPL 2022 that GT had defeated RR. The end result was a fair reflection of the standing of the two teams. Gujarat were the most consistent side right through the tournament, while Rajasthan were always second best. The IPL 2022 saw some memorable performances by players across franchises. It was a tough task to put together a combined XI. But after considering all permutations and combinations, here’s Cricket Today’s team of IPL 2022.

Openers: Jos Buttler, KL Rahul

RR’s Jos Buttler and LSG’s KL Rahul will open the innings in the team of IPL 2022. Buttler had a sensational tournament, clinching the Orange Cap with 863 runs in 17 matches at an average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05. He smashed four hundreds and as many fifties in the edition but could not come up with a big knock in the final.

LSG skipper KL Rahul had another prolific season. In 15 matches, he smashed 616 runs at an average of 51.33 and a strike rate of 135.38. He scored two hundreds and four fifties. Rahul’s strike rate under pressure, though, remains a talking point.

Middle-order & all-rounders: Rahul Tripathi, Hardik Pandya (capt), David Miller, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Andre Russell

Rahul Tripathi was terrific for SRH with his aggressive batting. He smashed 413 runs in 14 matches at an average of 37.55 and an impressive strike rate of 158.23. He will occupy the crucial No. 3 slot in the team of IPL 2022.

On expected lines, Hardik Pandya leads the team of the tournament and will bat at the No. 4 position, which he made his own during the competition. With the bat, Pandya contributed 487 runs in 15 games at an average of 44.27. He was the star performer in the final with the ball, claiming 3 for 17 and scoring a pressure-easing 34. His captaincy was refreshingly cool and uncomplicated.

IPL 2022 marked the return of ‘Killer Miller’. After a few poor seasons both in the IPL and on the international stage, David Miller flourished under Hardik’s assured captaincy. He ended the season with 481 runs at an average of 68.71 and a strike rate of 142.72. Miller played two match-winning knocks and a breezy cameo in the final.

If there was an award for the finisher of the season, it would go to Dinesh Karthik. The RCB keeper-batter was spectacular at the death. He played some sensational cameos to turn around matches. IPL 2022 brought him 330 runs at a strike rate of 183.33 and won him back a place in the Indian T20 squad.

There was a tussle between Andre Russell and Liam Livingstone for the overseas all-rounder slot. The former pipped the Englishman owing to his bowling prowess. Apart from hammering 335 runs at a strike rate of 174.47, he also claimed 17 scalps at a strike rate of under 10.

Bowlers: Harshal Patel, Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Rashid Khan

For the second season in a row, Harshal Patel impressed with his variations and brilliance at the death. The RCB pacer picked up 19 wickets at an excellent economy of 7.66. Mohammed Shami had a memorable IPL 2022 campaign and was one of the key factors behind GT’s unexpected success. A majority of his 20 wickets came at the top of the order and put the opposition in early trouble.

RR leggie Yuzvendra Chahal was the deserving winner of the Purple Cap. Having been released by RCB, he had a point to prove and did so by claiming 27 scalps, including a hat-trick. It was a tough fight between Rashid Khan and Wanindu Hasaranga for the second spinner’s slot. But the leggie got the nod as he also contributed with the bat. Rashid ended IPL 2022 with 19 wickets at an economy of 6.59. With the willow, he smacked 91 runs at a strike rate of 206.81.
