Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli are likely to be rested for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa. Even Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant will miss the matches. Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan are the front-runners to lead India against the visiting team.
The T20I series against the Proteas will start in New Delhi on June 9, with the remaining matches being held at Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, and Bengaluru, respectively.
The selectors will pick the team on May 22 — the last day of the league phase of the 15th edition of IPL — in Mumbai.
“Rohit, Virat, KL, Rishabh and Jasprit will all directly go to England for the ‘fifth Test’. We want our main players to remain fresh for the important tour of England,” a senior BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
Asked about captaincy, the source said: “Shikhar has already led India in Sri Lanka, while Hardik has impressed everyone with his captaincy for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022. So it will be a close call,” he added.
