There is a possibility that Brendon McCullum could leave Kolkata Knight Riders after IPL 2022 if he is appointed as England’s head coach. According to British media reports, he is in contention to become England’s new Test head coach.
The Daily Mail said McCullum, a key figure in New Zealand’s rise in Test cricket and limited-overs formats, has become a front-runner in the recently-appointed England director of cricket Rob Key’s list of possible coaches.
Key wants to have different coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket. With McCullum now in charge of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, many think he is more suited to white-ball formats.
He led New Zealand to the finale of the World Cup in 2015 and is a close friend of England’s limited-overs captain, Eoin Morgan. He represented New Zealand in 101 Test matches.
Meanwhile, if he gets the Test job, he will pip Gary Kirsten, the other contender to coach the team in the longest format of the game. Paul Collingwood, the former England all-rounder, wants to work with the white-ball squad.
